Eagles Picked To Play Argentina

The Eagles will mix experience with youth as they've picked their line-up to face Argentina tomorrow in Houston. Blaine Scully will captain the team from fullback and he'll be joined by other veterans in Todd Clever, Cam Dolan, Greg Peterson, Eric Fry, and Taku Ngwenya. Other than that it's a lot of new faces, including James Bird, Kingsley McGowan, and David Tameilau.

Up front World Cup veterans Eric Fry and Chris Baumann will get the nod at prop while Joe Taufete'e will start at hooker. At lock, Greg Peterson was expected to start and that's indeed the case. Joining him is Brodie Orth who has been solid for Kansas City as well as Boston. Rounding out the forwards is Cam Dolan and Todd Clever at the flanker positions with Life West's David Tameilau at Number 8. Many observers have picked Tameilau to be the breakout player of this year's ARC.

In the backs Niku Kruger will start at scrumhalf. He also has World Cup experience having played against South Africa. Joining him in the halfbacks is Old Blue stalwart James Bird. He's often been talked about as the second best fly-half in the U.S. over the last couple of years behind AJ MacGinty.

Kingsley McGowan will start in his hometown on the wing opposite Taku Ngwenya with Blaine Scully at fullback. Lemoto Filikitonga and Chad London are the centers.

"The country is only used to about six test matches a year," head coach Mitchell said in a U.S.A. Rugby press release. "Now we're getting close to 12 with the inaugural Americas Rugby Championship. As we saw in the World Cup, we weren't deep enough in terms of experience. There were great 50-minute periods but we need to stay in the game for 80 minutes to give ourselves a chance of bridging the gap between us and the Tier One nations. Like anything, we need a starting point, and that's what Argentina will be – a starting point."

Forwards: Eric Fry, Joe Taufete'e, Chris Baumann, Brodie Orth, Greg Peterson, Cam Dolan, Todd Clever, David Tameilau

Backs: Niku Kruger, James Bird, Kingsley McGowan, Lemoto Filikitonga, Chad London, Taku Ngwenya, Blaine Scully

Bench: Mike Sosene-Feagai, Ollie Kilifi, James Hilterbrand, Ben Landry, Alec Gletzer, JP Eloff, Mike Te'o, Jake Anderson

  1. I really look froward to seeing both Kingsley McGowan and David Tameilau play at this level.
Call it a hunch, but I see great things coming from both of these young men!
David was an Alum from Salty Thompson's 2009 JRWT U-20 Team that was the runner-up to Romania! Best Wishes!

  2. Brodie Orth looked like a beast in practice yesterday.

Kingsley McGowan and Zee were back and forth across the pitch with Blaine leading (it was fairly obvious from Blaine's actions in practice who the Captain was going to be).
