DI Recap: Blacks Beat Reds In Massive Battle

Red River

The top club match in DI over the weekend was undisputedly the match between the Dallas Reds and the Austin Blacks. The winner would not only have the inside track at finishing in the top spot in the Red River Conference at the end of the year but would pick up valuable points in the Rugby Gold Cup as well.

As you'd expect with two top sides the battle was intense throughout with the Blacks coming out ahead 34-30. It was the Reds that would take the lead early as Blake Boulton hit a penalty to put Dallas up 3-0. That was followed by a try from Sam Rooke from Austin but soon Boulton hit is second penalty to make it 6-5.

The Reds caught a big break when Austin flanker Ngwako Ralepelle was shown a yellow card in the 25th minute. However, Dallas weren't able to take advantage until near the very end of the card when Spencer Cameron scored. the Reds led 11-5 at halftime.

The match turned early on in the second half. It only took the Blacks a minute to score as wing Rickey Johnson scored. That was followed up by a try from Pat Sullivan six minutes later to give the Blacks a 17-11 lead. That lead would then increase to 29-11 as Sullivan and Rooke each scored their second tries.

Dallas did their best to fight back. Two quick tries from Dale Russ and Boulton put the Reds down only six. Still, it was Austin's day and when Zach Mizell scored with just a few minutes left the Reds were able to hold on to the win despite Chad Josephy scoring late.

The other match in the Red River saw the Griffins beat the Dallas Harlequins 47-14.
