TIAR Awards, Overseas Player of the Year: Chris Wyles

Like many of the other categories in which we've given out this edition of the TIAR Awards there were a lot of candidates to choose from for our Overseas Player of the Year. Once again the likes of Blaine Scully and Scott LaValla (when he was with Stade Francais) had good years for their clubs. Eric Fry made an impact in the Premiership while others have worked their way into competitions across Europe and the Southern Hemisphere. We could have opted for players like Tim Maupin or Conor Kearns, both of whom had a great 2015 starting and scoring for Trinity. We could have also chosen Taku Ngwenya who was very hot for Biarritz in 2015 despite their struggles. Then there is of course Samu Manoa who secured a big time move to Toulon.  However, to us there was one player that stood out above the rest: Chris Wyles.

There isn't much you can say about Wyles that hasn't already been spoken. As this recent article points out he is absolutely willing to do anything for Saracens and the Eagles. Saracens played him at fullback, on the wing, and in the centers last year and in every position he excelled. He had a strong year in terms of scoring tries finishing second in the league table in that category with 13.  Additionally, his general savvy, although often unnoticed, is what helped the Sarries to the Premiership title, a match in which he scored a crucial try.

In Europe, Wyles helped lead the Saracens to a second place finish in a very difficult pool with Clermont, Munster, and Sale. He was additionally with the team as they made it to the semi-finals losing to Clermont.

It only goes to show how great of a year Wyles had for Saracens that we haven't even really mentioned his play for the Eagles yet. Maybe we'll save that for another category but we will say that for our money when all is said and done Wyles will go down as the greatest Eagle to date.

If the Eagles could only have a team full of players like Wyles there is no limit to how far the team could go. Now, only to have more players follow in his footsteps.
