(UPDATED) Thompson, Swiryn Out With ACL Injuries, Sydney Draw

Swiryn as captain of the Eagles a few years back.
When Kevin Swiryn went down without contact at the Wellington 7s everyone feared the worst. Swiryn has been in the midst of a fantastic comeback having torn his ACL prior in his career, forcing him to retire early from 15s duty and from Agen in France. Having worked his way back up into the team it looked like Swiryn was a serious contender to make the Olympics. Unfortunately it looks like his injury in Wellington is another ACL injury. Let's hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Brett Thompson was the odd man out on the 13-man roster heading into Wellington and Sydney but he's not going to get the chance to be called into the team as he also hurt is ACL. "For those of you who don't know I tore my ACL this past Wednesday," said Thompson on Instagram. "I love this sport and it's a risk every time you step on the pitch but I wouldn't have it any other way. In the words of the Terminator, I'll be back!!" It's unclear who the Eagles will call into their team or if Maka Unufe, who had to pull out of the tournament due to family reasons, will be back. Martin Iosefo has been called into the team.

Sydney 7s Draw

The Eagles have learned their draw for the Sydney 7s. After finishing in a tie for 7th place in Wellington the U.S. will play England, Japan, and Wales in Pool D. They faced England in Wellington and had a subpar performance. That said, they have played well against England this year and if the Eagles are confident they can beat anyone. They should be able to beat both Japan and Wales.

After Wellington the U.S. has moved down from 3rd in the standings to 6th although they sit just two points out of fourth place and eight out of third.
