Red River Recap: Big Wins For Austin & Dallas

The Red River division played their first matches since December and once again the Dallas Reds and the Austin Blacks showed why they are the best two teams in the division. The Blacks had little difficulty in beating the Dallas Harlequins 56-0. Matthew Radzavich (hat trick), Seth Saunders, Stephen Jones, Levi Kereti, David Comerford, Sam Rooke, and Tyler Terrazone had tries. The Blacks have had a lot of momentum behind the club late after a strong Gold Cup. They also have a solid front-row with Brendan Rams and Chris Baumann. Rams could easily be joining Baumann with the Eagles this year.

The Dallas Reds similarly enjoyed a strong result with a 62-0 win over HARC. Dual yellow cards to Spencer Cameron from Dallas and Grant Rhine from HARC set the Reds off with tries from Tucker Shaw (twice), Jeremy Neilson, and Kelly Kolberg before the half. Dale Russ, Chad Joseph (twice), Zack Klump (twice), Phil Bolton, and Spencer had second half tries.

The closest match of the weekend saw the Griffins beat the Austin Huns 34-24. The Griffins ran out to a 17-0 lead thanks to a penalty from Toby Quarendon and tries from Alex Reher and Inote Bulai. The Huns were able to make a comeback with Ratu Rokodulu scoring and then survived a yellow card just before halftime. The Huns got back within five just a few minutes after the half as Kyle Breytenback scored. However, a try from Detwan Robinson put the Griffins back in front comfortably by 12. Shawn Cox and Lomani Tongotongo scored tries a few minutes apart to level the score. Still, the Griffins would pull away thanks to a penalty from Quarendon and a late try from Jake McCloud.
