Eagles Abroad: Weekend Review

Eagles Abroad is brought to you by Grubber, makers of fine sporting apparel.

A new year and another strong weekend for Americans overseas. It begins with Greg Peterson who went the full 80 minutes for Glasgow against Edinburgh. Unfortunately for them they lost their second straight 1872 Cup match. Still, it's good for Peterson to have the confidence of the coaching staff. Also in the Guinness Pro12 AJ MacGinty came off the bench for Connacht but couldn't help his team to a win. Over in the Premiership, Chris Wyles started once again for Saracens. He was nearly joined by Titi Lamositele but Wyles came off just as Lamositele was coming on. Also coming off the bench in the Premiership was Paddy Ryan for Newcastle.

In the "lower" leagues of Europe Tim Maupin had another strong outing for Trinity. He and Conor Kearns are consistent starters with Maupin scoring a try this last weekend. Both players could be players to watch as PRO Rugby approaches. In the National League 1 Ronnie McLean's Richmond, Derek Lipscomb's Blackheath, and Robbie Shaw's Hartpury sit one, two, and three respectively in the race for promotion.

  1. Bravo, Greg Peterson!
And the game for MacGinty was an endurance match, with cold, teeming rain.
It seems that Pat Lam has fixed on two pairings for scrum hale/fly half - Kieran Marmion, Ireland international with Jack Carty and Ian Porter with USA international AJ MacGinty.
Is this strategy working? Not so far.
I'd like to see Marmion with MacGinty, but it's not my call.
