DI Recap: Comebacks All Around

Red River

Once again the Dallas Reds and Austin Blacks earned wins in the Red River Conference. The Blacks beat the crosstown Austin Huns handily 48-10 while the Reds beat their city rivals the Dallas Harlequins 36-30. The other match in the conference saw the Griffins beat HARC 64-5.

The Dallas derby proved to be the closest match of the weekend. The Harlequins went ahead 7-0 just five minutes in when Daron Liebenberg scored. It took another 25 minutes to get another score as both teams settled in but when they did it was the Harlequins again with Imilius Keyser crossing the line for a 12-0 lead.

That's when the Reds made their comeback. Dale Russ and Spencer Cameron had tried before the half and then in the second half it was Russ again that gave the Reds a 19-12 lead. The Harlequins would get a penalty but tries from Blake Boulton and Chad Joseph extended the Reds lead. The Harlequins tried to make a comeback with another Liebenberg try and another from Travis Stubbs to go along with an Anderson penalty. A penalty from Klump was all the scoring the Reds would need for the win.

The Huns would take a 5-0 lead less than 10 minutes in but then the Blacks rattled off 36 straight points to take a commanding lead. The Huns would grab another try in the second half but that was it as the Blacks finished out the match strong. As mentioned, the last match saw the Griffins beat HARC 64-5.

Pacific North

The Life West Gladiators are serious contenders for the DI title this year and they are rolling through the Pacific North. This week it was a 56-5 win over Fresno. The biggest challenger to the Gladiators this year is arguably the EPA Razorbacks. They did their part to earn a big win as they beat the San Jose Seahawks 48-19.

Pacific South

Both OMBAC and Santa Monica continued their preparations for the start of the PRP season this weekend with wins in DI. Santa Monica faced up against Los Angeles 31-24. PRP star Harry Bennett played a big role for the Dolphins with a number of conversions. Noah Trotter started the scoring for Santa Monica but was quickly replied by Rory Mallabum for LA. Bennet would restore the advantage with a try before LA went on a run with tries from Jose Valadez and Joshua Sowa as well as a penalty from Mallabum. Those tries gave them a 24-12 advantage with about 15 minutes to go. However, relying on their experience tries from Bennett, Trotter, and Philip Lydeard, gave the Dolphins the comeback win.

OMBAC had a relatively easy time with Downtown. From the start OMBAC were able to put up two tries before Downtown scored. In the second half OMBAC continued to push ending up with a 24-16 win. The other match in the region saw the Old Aztecs beat Pasadena 27-16.
