TIAR Awards, Men's Club Player of the Year: Pila Huihui

Photo: Andrew Kearney

It's hard to have a better year than the one Pila Huihui had. Rising from the club ranks in Northern California Huihui burst onto the scene with San Francisco Golden Gate this year in the PRP. Straight from the first weekend Huihui went on to score a record 17 tries. Six of those tries came in one match against Olympic Club! To put that in perspective, that is six more than the next closest player in the competition, teammate Mile Pulu, and seven more than try scoring machine Chad London from Glendale. Huihui was the fourth leading scorer in the total competition with only kickers on high scoring teams--Volney Rouse, Zach Pangelinan, and Max De Achaval-- higher than him. In fact, only he and Pulu were the non-kickers in the top 10.

Since his season ended with SFGG in the PRP he's played some 7s and has trained with the Tiger Rugby academy in Columbus. Huihui also spent some time playing for 1823 while in Ohio continuing his hot streak. While it was probably a little too late to break into the Eagles wing groups he certainly grabbed the attention of national selectors and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get his shot with the Eagles during the Americas Rugby Championship. Also, expect him to be one of the first non-capped players ready for PRO Rugby.

  1. How many games did it take for him to get 17 tries?
