PRO Rugby Completes First Combine

PRO Rugby completed their first combine over the weekend as nearly 60 athletes descended on Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California. The combine was put on in combination with Tiger Rugby led by James Walker, Nese Malifa, Ray Egan, and the rest of the Tiger Rugby staff. PRO Rugby Director of Rugby Steve Lewis and San Francisco head coach Paul Keeler were also in attendance.

Overall, Lewis came away impressed with the group of athletes and the combine in general. "It was mostly established rugby players with some crossovers. There were a couple of known quantities like Joe Taufetee and Spike Davis. Out of the combine we picked up three or four unknowns that came on the radar, which is great."

Players came not just from Southern California but from Northern California, Utah, Hawaii, and the rest of the West. The purpose of the combine, much like the National Tracking Camps run by Alex Magleby and U.S.A. Rugby, was to identify players that hadn't been on the radar. Eagles 7s player Matai Leuta was identified through such a camp it's likely that three or four previously unidentified players from this camp could earn PRO Rugby contracts.

"The rugby combine is a relatively new phenomenon," said Lewis. "It's combination of an NFL combine with physical tests in the morning and in the afternoon they are testing rugby skills. That part is evolving. The afternoon was breakdown, tackle technique, catch & pass. It's a combination of testing ability and "rugby convertability.' Saturday on the rugby side was as good as I've seen."

The combine was not a one off. In order to identify people that might have slipped through the cracks and find players where players are under-served by elite clubs PRO Rugby is planning on having combines in NorCal, the Northeast, the South, and one other local.

Lewis also noted that the league has announcements in regards to franchises and coaches coming up soon.

  1. What a great facility, especially as it's a Rugby training center ., I believe they have one in Sacramento and 2 in Vegas . They run a youth program as rhino youth rugby I know this as I play for them. I believe they also have a rugby training academy as well.
