Austin To Host U.S. vs. Canada JWRT Qualifier

Once again the U.S. and Canadian U-20 teams will go head to head for a spot in the Junior World Rugby Trophy. Although not yet official, the one off match will be part of a double-header in Austin on February 13th as the preceding match to the U.S. vs. Canada showdown in the Americas Rugby Championship. After a close match in the first meeting between the two teams Canada went on to run away with the second match in the two legged affair on Vancouver Island to qualify for the tournament. This year the series will just be the one match with the winner heading to Zimbabwe for the JWRT in late April.

The U.S. have undergone a number of changes from last year's team. Scott Lawrence was tapped to lead the team in August but has since had to step away for work reasons. JD Stephenson from Lindenwood has stepped up to guid the team. Canada held their second assembly earlier in the month while the U.S. will be announcing their larger squad and holding their first camp this weekend. Several U-20 players did take part in the College All-Americans camp in California last July. The team is once again getting a late start and the match comes in the middle of the college season but having a one off match in the United States could give them an advantage.

  1. Yet again USA Rugby does not seem to be taking U20 Eagles Rugby too seriously and just smack horribly of the good old days when the old 5 Nations teams Nations teams would get together the night before an international match for a bit of passing practice. Small wonder then that with this kind of preparation the U20's now have to qualify to play in the World Rugby tier two competition.
