Austin, Dallas Pick Up Gold Cup Wins

It was a solid day for the Red River yesterday in the first round of the Gold Cup as both Dallas and Austin picked up wins over their Midwest counterparts. Both matches yesterday saw great rugby that challenged individual teams and players, exactly what the competition was designed to do.

In the first match Dallas barely edged Metropolis 25-24. With only 13 minutes to go Dallas trailed 24-15 but were able to score a late try from Number 8 Dales Russ and a conversion and late penalty from Zack Klump for the comeback win.

Klump put the Reds up first with a penalty just a couple of minutes in before Metropolis peeled off a couple of tries to take a 12-3 lead. The Reds would then score a couple tries of their own through prop Chris Hopkins and flanker Collin Yerian to take a temporary halftime lead at 15-13. In the second half Metropolis scored two tries but were only able to convert one before the Reds mounted their comeback. Metropolis actually scored more tries than the Reds but it was Klump's kicking that was the difference.

Metropolis actually scored more tries than the Reds but it was Klump's kicking that was the difference. In the end Dallas picked up four points for the win while Metropolis picked up two bonus points. Because of those bonus points and their earlier win over Kansas City in Midwest play (which counts in the Gold Cup standings), Metropolis lead the competition with 7 points.

In the second match of the day the Austin Blacks beat the KC Blues 30-26. Each team scored four tries but like in the first match it was the kicking of Austin fly-half Hamish Roberts that pushed the Blacks to the win.

The Blacks took the lead early when they picked up a penalty from Roberts. They would then extend their lead in the 16th minute when Tyler Terrazone crossed the line and in the 21st minute when World Cup veteran Chris Baumann did the same. With Roberts hitting one of the conversion the Blacks let 15-0.

Still, it didn't take long for the Blues to get back in the match. Stalwart Cody Weber would get the first of his two tries and then Matt Behnami would score to put the Blues down 12-15. That said, the Blacks would put their stamp on the first half with a second try from lock Terrazone to push the halftime lead to 22-14.

In the second half Roberts would add to his total with a penalty to extend the lead to 25-14. Once again the Blues made a comeback with Weber scoring to cut the lead to four. Still, this match was going the Blacks way and when Roberts scored a late try that was all they needed for the win, even with Kevin Schwartze scoring for the Blues to finish out the match. Austin got four points from the match while the Blues picked up two bonus points.

The teams will swap opponents tomorrow with the Blues playing the Reds and Metropolis facing Austin. The matches will be played at Swope Park in Kansas City with the first match starting at 12:00 p.m. et/9:00 a.m. pt.
