College 7s Nationals Pools Released

With the U.S.A. Rugby national 15s championships now concluded the attention is turning to 7s at the College 7s Nationals in Denver later this month. Today the pool pairings for the tournament were announced.

In the men's bracket there are several strong pools, beginning in Pool F with Davenport, Miami (OH), Sacramento State, and Utah. Davenport are coming off a very strong season in the Mid-South and with JP Eloff playing incredibly well they could be very dangerous. The Utes have played plenty of 7s this year having already played in the Las Vegas Invitational. They also played better as the year went on in 15s and should be one of the teams to push for a title. Miami are no slouches themselves and Sac State have done well in 7s in the past.

The biggest complication for Pool F and the other pools is that with 24 teams in the men's DI bracket only the pool winners are guaranteed to advance with the top two second place teams also making the Cup. That could make it difficult for two teams to advance from Pool F.

Another stacked pool is Pool E with Arkansas, Central Florida, Lindenwood, and Stony Brook. Lindenwood and Central Florida should be the favorites to advance but don't count out either Stony Brooke or Arkansas.

In Pool A Central Washington should be the favorite to advance and the same goes for St. Mary's in Pool B. In Pool C LVI runners-up AIC are the likely favorites to wing he pool but Bowling Green and Wisconsin are strong teams. Lastly, in Pool D Arizona State will have to hold off challenges from Cal Poly and Iowa.

Pool A: Central Washington, Nevada-Reno, North Texas, San Diego State
Pool B: Colorado State, St. Mary's, Texas State, West Virginia
Pool C: AIC, Bowling Green, Mississippi State, Wisconsin
Pool D: Arizona State, Cal Poly, Iowa, Texas A&M
Pool E: Arkansas, Central Florida, Lindenwood, Stony Brook
Pool F: Davenport, Miami (OH), Sacramento State, Utah

Women's Bracket

The women's bracket will run like a standard tournament with four pools of four. DI champions Penn State have to be considered among the favorites along with runners-up Central Washington. Both should win their pools with ease. Other teams to watch out for include Stanford, James Madison, and Lindenwood.

Pool A: Montana State, Penn State, Rutgers, UC-Davis
Pool B: Air Force, Stanford, Texas Tech, Virginia
Pool C: Central Washington, Humboldt State, North Carolina, Princeton
Pool D: Cal, James Madison, Lindenwood, Texas

Men's DII Bracket

Things are very wide open in the men's DII bracket. Notre Dame College should be a difficult side while the Coast Guard has seen results at the senior level recently. With only three pools for four the top two sides from each pool advance with the two best third place teams.

Pool A: Coast Guard, Minnesota-Duluth, Principia, Providence
Pool B: East Carolina, St. Louis, Vassar College, Wisconsin-Whitewater
Pool C: James Madison, Notre Dame College, Southern Illinois, UNC-Wilmington
