Eagles-All Blacks Television Rating (Updated)

One of the key indicators whether the All Blacks match will have long term success is the television ratings from the match. According to SportsBusiness Daily Assistant Managing Editor Austin Karp the match drew a 0.7 rating. That's a similar rating to what the F1 USA Grand Prix also drew on NBC during a similar time spot but on Sunday. In comparison the NASCAR Spring Cup got a 2.5 in the afternoon on Sunday. On Saturday primetime college football drew 0.9 (Illinois/Ohio State), 0.9 (Navy/Notre Dame), and 0.5 (Stanford/Oregon). The Breeders' Cup drew a 0.4. (We previously had these number incorrect, reflect the number of viewers in the millions, not in the ratings.)

The Eagles-All Blacks match was not in primetime which was a factor and did go up against other college football games. However, the match did do about as well as the other rugby matches that have been on NBC, including the Las Vegas 7s and the CRC. When you couple in the fact that much of the rugby public was at the game it makes for an okay showing. However, they aren't earth shattering numbers. That's not unusual and just shows how much room rugby has to grow in America.

  1. Ouch, that is a crap number...I am happy NBC Sports is carrying rugby, but I don't like NBC's coverage of sports in general. I would like to see anyone else take the charge on televised rugby in the US.

  2. Sky and FOX televise most rugby on the planet. It would make sense to let FOX do it, and just transfer so of the lads who have been doing it to the US Market, and let them just go gang busters on it.

  3. Ratings and millions of viewers are not one and the same.

The Breeders Cup actually had a 0.4 rating. 2.49 was the number of viewers (in millions) that the rating translated to. Similarly, Illinois-Ohio State got a 0.9, and Stanford-Oregon got a 0.5. As such, a 0.7 is actually a pretty good rating.

    1. Thanks for the clarification. This obviously isn't our area of expertise.

    3. So if a .4 was 2.49 mill would the .7 in the 4 mill neighborhood? Not so bad considering it was in the middle of college football. And I don't recall a lot of promotion leading up to the game ..

  4. rating could of easily went over the 1.0 mark but for some reason there was absolutely 0 promos for the game. I was really surprised that nether NBC nor USA put something out. even if it was just over youtube. I saw 1 brief commercial the night before on universal and that was it. hopefully for the WC they will do better.
