SCRC Digest: Ole Miss Overcomes Alabama

USC Head Coach Mark Morris with Freshman Wing Tim Hamill
by Ted Hardy

The SCRC slate this past weekend had a pair of blowouts and one pivotal match that may have decided one of the playoff slots in the West Division. Tennessee and LSU posted shutout victories over Kentucky and Mississippi State respectively while Ole Miss won a very important game over Alabama. Ole Miss' win over Alabama gives the team a very good opportunity to advance to the SCRC playoffs.

SCRC Players of the Week

A number of players put forth big performances this weekend in the SCRC. So much so that the SCRC named Co-Players of the Week in both divisions.

East Division Players of the Week

The East Division Co-Player of the Week is Tim Hamill, a Freshman wing from the University of South Carolina. Hamill scored three tries on exceptional runs as the Gamecocks collected a 47-17 win over East Carolina in a non-conference game. Hamill also put in a great defense effort limiting opportunities for ECU out wide.

The other East Division Co-Player of the Week is Matt Johnson, a Senior center from the University of Tennessee. Johnson posted a hat trick of tries and bolstered the midfield defense as the Volunteers shutout Kentucky 79-0.

West Division Players of the Week

The West Division Co-Player of the Week is Malcolm Gander, a Junior from the University of Mississippi. Gander played a pivotal role in Ole Miss' big 29-22 victory over Alabama. Gander's tactical kicking kept Alabama pinned in their own territory for much of the contest and his control of the defensive line were major factors in the win over Alabama.

The other West Division Co-Player of the Week is Ben Winiarczyk, a Junior flyhalf from Auburn University. Winiarczyk scored five tries and consistently challenged the gainline throughout the match. Winiarczyk orchestration of the Auburn attack helped lead the Tigers to their first win of the season.

SCRC Coaches Corner

In this week's SCRC Coaches Corner, we get a little bit of time with Ole Miss Head Coach David Chapman and get his thoughts on Ole Miss' big win this past weekend over Alabama.

On their victory over Alabama:

Anytime Ole Miss and Alabama play a match its going to be a tough match on both sides. For Ole Miss to come away with the victory is huge. It puts our team one step closer to our goal.

Keys to victory:

Our ability to stick with the game plan helped out a lot. We knew that it was going to be a physical game and we had to match the intensity. In the second half we strayed from the plan a bit, but the players were able to get back on track and it paid off at the end of the match.

Keeping focused down the stretch:

The players understand that the season is a campaign and in order to accomplish our end goal we have to take the campaign one game at a time. LSU is our next match and we know that they are a great side. In order to have an opportunity in this match, we have to work hard and be diligent with our preparation.

On inclusion in the SCRC:

Being a part of the SCRC has been a very positive situation for our program. The level of competition and the growth has been extremely beneficial. It has definitely reignited some old rivalries and open the door for the potential for more.

Week 6 Preview

Tennessee (3-0) at Alabama (1-2) - The lone game on the SCRC schedule this weekend sees Tennessee travel to face Alabama. The Crimson Tide suffered a disappointing loss last weekend that may have cost them any chance at reaching the SCRC playoffs. To compound matters for Alabama, this weekend they face a Volunteer squad that has outscored their opponents 218-29 this season. The two sides last met in the 2012 SCRC Playoffs when Alabama pushed Tennessee all match before falling 31-22. Alabama will need a repeat effort to keep this game from turning sour.
