The Eagles heartbreaking loss to Canada yesterday meant that they got the unfavorable task of taking on Wales. The Welsh finished 8th on the circuit last year and have had plenty of success so it was always going to be a challenge for the Eagles. However, the game started out well as the U.S. kept possession, leading to a Luke Hume try. After a well taken lineout by the U.S., the ball ended up in Hume's hands who juked past a couple of players, held off a tackle, and scored. Tai Enosa's conversion was good to give the team a 7-0 lead. The U.S. were able to get possession shortly after the restart but Brett Thompson was judged to hold onto the ball. Wales took a quick restart and after some poor tackling scored a try. They missed the conversion. Subsequent sloppy play by the U.S. on the restart led to another Wales try and missed conversion. It looked like that is how the game would go into the half until a hard tackle by Matt Hawkins on the restart turnovered the ball. Some great teamwork by the team eventually sprung Thompson for the try. Enosa's conversion was good. Eagles 14-10 Wales halftime.
The second half begin in equally as bright of fashion as the first. Make Unufe broke through some poor Welsh defensing for a try. Enosa missed the conversion but the Eagles led 19-10. After the restart, despite some great defense by the Eagles, Wales managed to pull a try back. Conversion was no good. Then after some bad decision-making by the Eagles, Wales added another. This time they made their conversion to take a 22-19 lead with two minutes to go. It just went downhill from their for the Eagles. Horrible and even comical errors on the restart gifted a try for Wales that sealed the match. They Welsh then stalled for time and won the match 27-19.
It had to be an extremely disappointing result for the Eagles after playing well for so long. 7's is a cruel game but you should never be beating yourself. Hopefully they can improve and win the shield. The U.S. will play the loser of Tonga and Spain at 12:42 a.m. et.
Eagles Starting lineup: Isles, Palefau, Hawkins, Hume, Enosa, Thompson, Unufe.
